Variety Characteristics:
- Yanhusuo (Corydalis yanhusuo), a perennial herb of the Corydalis genus in the Papaveraceae (poppy) family, also known as Yuanhu, is one of the renowned "Zhejiang Eight Famous Herbs." Its medicinal part is the dried tuber, which is flattened-spherical, measuring 7–15 mm in diameter, slightly concave at the top and bearing fibrous roots at the base. The cross-section is deep yellow and may split longitudinally into several segments. The plant grows 9–20 cm tall, is glabrous (hairless), and features an erect, often branched stem, pinnately lobed leaves with lanceolate segments, purplish-red flowers, and a linear capsule. It flowers from March to April.
- Yanhusuo has a warm nature and pungent, bitter taste, acting on the Liver, Spleen, Heart, and Lung meridians. It is renowned for its four primary effects: activating blood circulation, promoting Qi movement, alleviating pain, and promoting diuresis, with pain relief being its most notable property. Traditional processing with vinegar is believed to enhance its Qi-moving and pain-relieving effects while softening blood vessels. Modern pharmacological studies confirm that its efficacy is stronger in an acidic environment.
- The plant has a shallow root system, preferring warm and humid climates. While cold-resistant, it is intolerant to drought and intense sunlight. It thrives in humus-rich, loose, well-drained sandy loam, but clay soils and waterlogged areas are unsuitable for cultivation. The tubers are harvested in early summer when the stems and leaves wither, then cleaned, boiled until no white core remains, and sun-dried for medicinal use. Originally growing in mountainous forests, it is now mostly cultivated.
