Variety Characteristics:
- Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge is a deciduous shrub or small tree belonging to the genus Xanthoceras in the family Sapindaceae. Its twigs are stout, reddish-brown and glabrous, with terminal and lateral buds covered with imbricate scales; the leaflets are membranous or papery, lanceolate or subovate, with sharply serrated margins; the petals are white, with a purplish-red or yellow base. It flowers in spring and fruits in early autumn.Xanthoceras sorbifolium prefers full sunlight, and is drought-tolerant, barren-tolerant and salt-alkali tolerant. It is highly adaptable with low soil requirements, but is intolerant to waterlogging and sensitive to strong winds. As a deep-rooted tree species, it has a well-developed taproot and strong sprouting ability, yet its root callus capacity is poor, making it prone to root rot once damaged.Xanthoceras sorbifolium has an elegant form with large inflorescences, dense flowers and a long flowering period, making it an excellent ornamental species that can be planted singly or in groups in parks, gardens and green areas. Its stems and branches can be used medicinally to dispel wind and dampness, reduce swelling and relieve pain. Mature trees have a well-developed, deep and widely spread root system, serving as a pioneer species for windbreak and sand fixation, small watershed management and reforestation of cultivated land.In addition, its kernels are rich in oil, which can be used as industrial raw material for high-grade lubricants and cosmetics, as well as for biodiesel production and other industrial products. Its fresh leaves can be processed into tea, while its seed coats and pericarps can be used to produce activated carbon.
