Variety characteristics:

• W1388 Hong Yun is an attractive fresh-eating Asian radish producing smooth, cylindrical roots with brilliant red skin and crisp white flesh. The uniform roots grow to approximately 10.2 inches long and 2.8 inches across, developing straight sides and neatly rounded tips. Roots mature in approximately 55–60 days under suitable cool-season conditions. The juicy white interior offers a crisp texture and pleasantly sweet, refreshing flavor, making it excellent for fresh slicing, salads, vegetable platters, quick pickles and chilled side dishes.
Hong Yun holds its firm eating quality well and shows useful tolerance to pithiness when harvested at the proper stage. Timely harvest, steady moisture and cool growing temperatures remain important, as overmature or heat-stressed radishes can become fibrous, hollow or strongly flavored. Grow in deep, loose and well-drained soil using raised beds or ridged rows. Space plants approximately 7.9 inches apart in rows spaced 9.8 inches apart. Spring crops perform best under protected conditions where seedlings can be shielded from prolonged chilling and sudden temperature changes.
