U2689 Zhonghua No.1 is a robust Chinese bunching onion variety distinguished by its long white shanks and enlarged, drumstick-shaped bases. Mature plants may reach approximately 35–43 inches tall. The white portion typically measures about 16–20 inches long, with a stem diameter of approximately 1.6–2 inches and an expanded base about 2.4–3.1 inches across. Under suitable growing conditions, individual plants may weigh approximately 1.1–1.7 lb. The thick white shanks have a pronounced onion aroma and pungent flavor suited to stir-fries, braised dishes, soups and other cooked preparations.
