Variety Characteristics:
- Silver ragwort (Jacobaea maritima) is a perennial evergreen herb in the Asteraceae family, genus Jacobaea, often cultivated as an annual or biennial. The plant grows approximately 60 cm tall, densely covered with silvery-white pubescence, and is heavily branched. Its basal leaves are elliptical-lanceolate and entire, while the upper leaves are 1-2-pinnately lobed, with oblong, thin lobes that are snowflake-shaped or spoon-shaped, densely covered on both surfaces with silvery-white pubescence. The capitula are solitary at the top of each branch, clustered into corymbs. The flowers are small, with golden-yellow ray florets and brownish-yellow tubular florets. The flowering period is from June to September. Native to the Mediterranean, it prefers warm temperatures (optimal range 20-25°C), ample sunlight, and fertile, loose soil, but cannot tolerate high temperatures.
- Silver ragwort's distinctive silvery-white foliage serves as an excellent transitional color between cool and warm-toned plants, creating a refreshing landscape effect. It is suitable for flower bed groundcovers, edging, flower border accents, or as a color block when paired with vibrant flowers. Due to its preference for dry soil, it is also commonly used in rock gardens to complement dark-colored plants or adorn rock edges. Note: When used as a mid-foreground plant in a flower bed or border, as the plant continues to grow taller, it needs proper arrangement or timely pinching to control height and promote branching (to form clumps), preventing damage to the overall landscape effect later.
