Purple Sheep Fescue Seeds - Festuca rubra | Turf Grass with Dual Forage & Ornamental Function
Overview
Purple Sheep Fescue is a cool-season perennial turfgrass, reaching a height of 40-60cm, with erect stems or slightly curved bases. A large number of leaves emerge from the root crown, folded or involute, presenting a narrow-linear shape. Leaves are 20-30cm long and only 3-5mm wide, with a fine texture. The panicle inflorescence is 10-15cm long, with spikelets bearing 3-6 florets. The overall plant form is elegant, with a long green period.
Key Features
• Prefers cool, humid climates but also possesses a certain degree of heat tolerance, offering wide adaptability.
• Thrives in full sun but also tolerates partial shade, growing well under trees and beside buildings.
• Tolerant of acidity and poor soils, with undemanding soil requirements; performs best in fertile, moist, organic-rich soils.
• Strong disease resistance and vigorous growth result in low daily maintenance costs.
• Dense fibrous root system with short rhizomes provides significant soil stabilization and slope protection effects.
Cultivation Guidelines
• Sowing Time: Best sown in spring or autumn — after soil temperatures rise in spring or before temperatures drop in autumn.
• Soil Requirements: Ordinary soil is sufficient; well-drained soils rich in organic matter produce more uniform seedling emergence.
• Light Management: Suitable for both full sun and partial shade; shade tolerance is superior to most cool-season grasses.
• Mowing Recommendations: Maintain at a height of 4-6cm for ornamental lawns; mow lower when used in sports field mixtures.
Why Choose Purple Sheep Fescue?
• Wide Landscape Application: Long-lived with attractive color, suitable for airport green spaces, courtyards, flower bed edging, understory planting, and more, providing excellent ornamental effects.
• Outstanding Ecological Value: Dense root systems effectively bind soil, making it suitable for highway slopes, riverbank protection, and soil erosion control areas.
• Excellent for Sports Field Mixtures: Wear-tolerant and quick to recover, often mixed with other grass species for high-standard turf on sports fields, golf courses, and the like.
• Dual Forage Value: Highly palatable, favored by cattle, sheep, rabbits, and geese; can serve as quality green forage, delivering both landscaping and forage benefits.
