Variety Characteristics:
- Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Lythraceae family. It has a thick rhizome and sessile, lanceolate or broadly lanceolate leaves. Its flowers are reddish-purple or lavender, clustered in cymes with very short pedicels and inflorescence stalks, giving the entire flowering branch a large spike-like appearance. It blooms from July to September. It prefers bright light, is highly cold-tolerant, and thrives in moist environments. While adaptable to various soil conditions, it grows best in deep, humus-rich soil.
- Purple loosestrife is a wild plant with both medicinal and edible uses. The entire plant can be used for medicinal purposes: it is cold in nature and sweet in taste, with the effects of clearing heat and stopping uterine bleeding. Its young stems and leaves can be consumed as a wild vegetable: after blanching in boiling water, they can be eaten cold, stir-fried, or added to soups. Additionally, it has a compact plant shape, neat inflorescences, bright and eye-catching flowers, and a long flowering period, making it an excellent ornamental plant ideally suited for mass planting in shallow water along riverbanks, or as ground cover and flower border material.
