Main Variety Characteristics

- Pittosporum tobira (common name: Hai Tong) is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the Pittosporaceae family. Mature plants can reach up to 6 meters tall, with young branches covered in brown pubescence and prominent lenticels. Its leathery leaves, persistent for 2 years, are densely clustered at the branch tips. Blooming from March to May, it produces terminal or subterminal umbels or corymbose umbels of flowers that open white with a sweet fragrance, fading to yellow as they mature. The round, ribbed or trigonous capsules (approx. 12 mm in diameter) ripen from September to October.

- This highly adaptable species thrives in an optimal temperature range of 15-30℃, with excellent cold and heat tolerance, as well as wind and humidity resistance. It adapts well to a wide range of light conditions: while it grows best in partial shade, it tolerates both full sun and shaded environments with ease. It is not fussy about soil, growing well in clay, sand, and slightly saline-alkaline soils, though it prefers fertile, moist substrates. Additionally, it boasts strong resistance to common toxic air pollutants including sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, and chlorine.

- A versatile, high-value ornamental and greening species, Pittosporum tobira is widely used in landscaping and horticulture. It performs beautifully in containers for decorating exhibition halls, conference venues and other indoor spaces. For outdoor planting, it is ideal for solitary, cluster or row planting, perfect for flower beds, courtyard landscapes, garden hedges and green belts. It is particularly well-suited for greening projects in industrial and mining areas.
