Variety Characteristics:
- Spider Flower (Cleome houtteana, syn. Tarenaya hassleriana) is an annual robust herbaceous plant belonging to the Cleomaceae family. It grows to a height of 1–1.5 meters, with palmately compound leaves. The petioles often have pale yellow prickles, and the stipules are spiny. Its terminal raceme produces pink flowers with obovate spoon-shaped petals resembling butterflies in flight, hence the name. The flowering period is from March to August.
- This plant prefers warm, dry environments with ample sunlight, tolerating both heat and partial shade. It thrives in temperatures of 15–25°C and dislikes cold conditions. Well-suited to loose, fertile, well-drained soil, it is excellent for flower beds and container gardening, while also exhibiting strong resistance to sulfur dioxide and chlorine.
- The entire plant is used medicinally, with a pungent, astringent, neutral nature and mild toxicity. Traditionally applied to alleviate rheumatic pain, damp-heat sores, and skin itching, it demonstrates effects in dispelling wind-cold, killing parasites, and relieving pruritus.
