Characteristics of the variety:

- Pigeon pea is an upright shrub reaching 1-3 meters in height with dense branching. Young branches exhibit distinct longitudinal ridges and a dense covering of short, grayish-white pubescence. The leaves are compound, consisting of three lanceolate to elliptical leaflets measuring 5-10 cm in length. The flowers are yellow with a typical papilionaceous (butterfly-like) structure. The fruit develops as linear pods measuring 4-7 cm in length, with a flowering and fruiting period extending from February to November. As a short-day crop, reduced light conditions significantly promote flower bud differentiation. It thrives in warm climates, with an optimal temperature range of 18-34°C and is suitable for cultivation up to altitudes of 1,600 meters. Highly drought-tolerant and resistant to poor soils, it demonstrates broad adaptability to various soil types.

- This species represents the world's sixth-largest edible legume and the only tree-type edible legume. Its seeds are processed into tofu or used as bun fillings. All plant parts - roots, leaves and seeds - possess medicinal properties: The seeds, with their pungent and astringent nature and neutral thermal property, promote diuresis, reduce edema and disperse blood stasis, while the roots exhibit heat-clearing and detoxifying effects. The leaves serve as livestock feed and green manure, while also functioning as an excellent host for lac insects. Owing to its rapid growth, wide adaptability, and capacity for soil conservation and improvement, pigeon pea plays a significant role in establishing mixed tree-shrub-grass ecosystems.
