Key Characteristics of the Variety:
- Monkey Tail Cactus (scientific name: Hildewintera colademononis, formerly known as Cleistocactus colademononis) is a succulent belonging to the genus Hildewintera in the Cactaceae family, native to Bolivia. It features fleshy, columnar stems measuring approximately 2 cm in diameter and growing up to 1.5 meters long. The stems are densely covered with soft white hairs that create a graceful drooping effect. During its seedling stage, the plant grows upright, but gradually develops pendulous stems as it matures. When producing nine or more branches, it's commonly called "Nine-Tailed Fox" due to its resemblance to a fox's tail.
- The plant's fuzzy stems naturally cascade like animal fur, making it highly ornamental. During summer and autumn, it blooms vibrant orange-red, funnel-shaped flowers that beautifully adorn the hairy stems. This drought-resistant plant dislikes waterlogging and thrives in cool, well-ventilated areas with bright indirect light. It requires shading from intense sunlight during summer. The optimal growing temperature ranges between 15-28℃. Winter protection is needed when temperatures fall below 5℃, while summer temperatures above 30℃ require enhanced ventilation and cooling. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry - approximately every two weeks during active growth, with reduced watering in winter. For cultivation, use loose, well-aerated succulent-specific soil or a custom potting mix with excellent drainage.
- Thanks to its distinctive form and colorful blossoms, the Monkey Tail Cactus is particularly popular as a hanging basket plant, ideal for decorating both indoor and outdoor spaces like balconies and windowsills.
