Main Characteristics of the Variety:
- Mongolian Thyme (Thymus mongolicus) is a small semi-shrub belonging to the genus Thymus in the Lamiaceae family. Its stem is short, slender, dark green, hollow, cylindrical, and covered with prickles. Its leaves are large, opposite, light green, ovate, smooth, and hairless. Its flowers are small and densely packed, with a dark purple corolla. Its seeds are small, dark brown, and hard. It blooms from June to July and fruits from July to August. The entire plant has a strong fragrance with an elegant musky aroma.
- This plant is commonly found in rocky mountainous areas, slopes, valleys, roadsides, and weedy thickets. It is highly adaptable, tolerant of cold, drought, and poor soil conditions, and has excellent resistance to diseases and insects. It prefers a warm, sunny, and dry environment. It is not very demanding on soil but grows best in well-drained calcareous soil.
- Mongolian Thyme has a sweet, slightly herbal aroma and boasts both medicinal and edible value. It dispels wind, relieves exterior symptoms, promotes qi circulation, and relieves pain, making it a popular remedy for colds, toothaches, indigestion, acute gastroenteritis, and hypertension. In cooking, it adds a unique flavor to sauces, soups, stews, and baked ingredients. In addition, its lush, densely covering foliage makes it ideal for rock gardens, courtyards, or as edging material for flower borders. It also purifies the air and can be used for essential oil extraction, with significant economic value.
