- The 'Slender Waist' gourd is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Lagenaria in the family Cucurbitaceae. It grows to approximately 3 meters in height, with trailing stems densely covered with hairs. The leaves are ovate, cordate or reniform, with finely serrated margins. The fruit is 20–30 cm long, and is named for its shape resembling two stacked spheres: smaller at the top, larger at the bottom, and constricted in the middle to form a slender wasp waist. Fully mature fruits feature thick, firm, compact rinds that are strong, durable and resistant to damage. This variety thrives in warm, humid conditions with abundant sunlight. It is not cold-tolerant and dislikes intense heat, with an optimal growth temperature of around 30°C. It prefers organic manure and grows well in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It has versatile uses: it can be made into containers for holding water and wine, as well as vases and home ornaments. Suitable for planting in parks, courtyards and scenic spots, it offers both practical and ornamental value.
