- Double Portulaca is an annual herbaceous plant. It grows 10–30 cm tall, with prostrate or ascending purplish-red stems that are much branched and tufted with hairs at the nodes. Leaves are densely clustered at the branch ends, with lower leaves irregularly alternate. Leaf blades are slender and cylindrical, glabrous, and usually bear long white soft hairs in the leaf axils. Flowers are solitary or several clustered at the branch tips, 2.5–4 cm in diameter, opening by day and closing at night, blooming fully in sunlight. Petals are double, obovate, slightly concave at the apex, 12–30 mm long, with a rich variety of colors. Propagation is extremely easy; it can be grown successfully from both seeds and cuttings. It prefers warm and sunny conditions and grows poorly in shady and damp locations. It is highly tolerant of poor soil and drought, and thrives in well‑drained sandy soil. It is easy to care for and produces abundant blooms.
