Species Characteristics:

- Chinese arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco) is an arbor belonging to the genus Platycladus in the family Cupressaceae. Its scale-like leaves are opposite and arranged in one plane, with flattened branchlets. It is monoecious; the seed cones mature in the same year and dehisce. The seeds are ovoid or subelliptical, slightly acute at the apex, grayish-brown or purplish-brown, slightly ridged, wingless or with very narrow wings. It flowers from March to April, and the cones mature in October. This species is heliophilous and suitable for growing on sunny and semi-sunny slopes of low mountains. Although it has weak wind resistance and grows poorly in windward sites, it is tolerant to drought and barren soil, and can grow on steep slopes and in rock crevices where most other tree species cannot survive. In addition, Chinese arborvitae is evergreen with an attractive tree form, making it highly valuable for landscaping. Its wood is fine-textured, decay-resistant, solid and durable, and also has certain medicinal value.
