Burdock Seeds – Premium Herb, Easy to Plant and Manage, Low Maintenance, with Medicinal and Edible Value

Overview

Burdock is a hardy, light-loving root vegetable that prefers warm, humid conditions but tolerates both heat and cold remarkably well. Seeds have a distinct dormancy period and require light for optimal germination – they sprout quickly and at a high rate when exposed to light. The optimal germination temperature is 20–25°C; temperatures above 30°C or below 15°C reduce germination, and below 10°C no germination occurs. During the growing season, burdock loves strong sunlight and grows fastest at average temperatures of 20–25°C. The above-ground parts tolerate intense summer heat up to 38°C, while the roots survive winter temperatures below 3°C (foliage dies back but roots resprout in spring). After reaching a certain size (taproot diameter over 3mm) and experiencing prolonged low temperatures under long-day conditions, the plant will flower and set seed.

Key Features

• Light-dependent germination – sow on surface or cover lightly for best results

• Optimal germination temperature: 20–25°C

• Grows fastest at 20–25°C, tolerates heat up to 38°C

• Roots survive winter cold (foliage dies below 3°C, roots resprout in spring)

• Requires full sun for vigorous growth

• Drought-tolerant but extremely sensitive to waterlogging (root rot within 2 days of flooding)

• Prefers sandy loam or sandy-textured soil, pH 6.5–7.5

• High potassium and calcium content in soil is beneficial

• Two sowing methods: row sowing (60cm rows, 2–3cm deep) or hill sowing (30×60cm, 4–6 seeds/hill, 2–3cm deep)

• Seed rate: 0.5–0.75 kg per mu

Cultivation Guidelines

• Seed preparation: Sun-dry seeds for 1–2 days before sowing, then soak in 40–50°C warm water for 1–2 hours. Remove and air-dry before sowing.

• Sowing: Choose either row sowing (60cm between rows, 2–3cm deep furrow, evenly distribute seeds, cover with 1–2cm soil) or hill sowing (30×60cm spacing, 4–6 seeds per hill, cover with 2–3cm soil).

• Post-sowing care: Lightly firm the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Cover with straw or mulch to retain moisture.

• Light: Requires full sun. Seeds germinate faster and at higher rates under light exposure.

• Temperature: Maintain 20–25°C for optimal germination and growth. The plant tolerates heat up to 38°C and winter cold (roots survive).

• Soil & site: Select alluvial sandy loam or sandy loam with near-neutral pH (6.5–7.5). Avoid low-lying areas with high water tables.

• Watering: Drought-tolerant but do not overwater. Waterlogging for more than 2 days causes root rot and forked roots.

• Fertility: Soil rich in potassium and calcium is ideal.

Why Choose This Variety?

Because burdock is one of the most resilient and rewarding root vegetables you can grow. It tolerates both summer heat and winter cold, bounces back after frost, and produces deep, nutritious taproots with minimal intervention. Its unique light-dependent germination means you get fast, uniform sprouting when sown correctly. Whether you are a home gardener or a commercial grower, burdock offers consistent yields, excellent storage potential, and culinary versatility – from stir-fries to teas to traditional herbal preparations. Choose burdock for a low-maintenance, high-value crop that thrives where many other roots fail.
