Variety Characteristics:
- Bouncing bet (Saponaria officinalis L.), also known as Shijianhua (soapwort), is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Saponaria in the Caryophyllaceae family. It grows 30-70 cm tall, with a thick, fleshy taproot, a thin and multi-branched rhizome, and erect stems (usually glabrous). Its leaves are elliptical or elliptical-lanceolate.
- This plant grows rapidly, boasting an elegant shape, dark green foliage, and a long flowering period, blooming in summer and autumn with flowers that gradually turn from white to pink. It prefers sunlight, tolerates partial shade, and is cold-tolerant, drought-tolerant, poor soil-tolerant, and pruning-tolerant. With strong adaptability, it can grow in both dry and moist soils and is slightly alkali-tolerant (optimal pH 6.5-7.5). However, it thrives in well-drained sandy soil or sloping land and is intolerant of waterlogging.
- With beautifully shaped flowers and a rich fragrance, it is suitable for landscaping in flower beds, borders, and rock gardens. It has a well-developed root system, strong weed resistance, and a high transplant survival rate. Requiring low-maintenance, it can quickly form a landscape effect and bloom continuously for many years. In addition, its roots can be used medicinally with expectorant, cough-relieving, asthma-easing and diuretic effects. Meanwhile, due to its saponin content, it can be used for washing utensils.
