Varietal Characteristics:

- Bat Chili (scientific name: Capsicum baccatum) is one of the commonly cultivated species in the Capsicum genus of the Solanaceae family. The immature fruits are bright green, turning vivid red upon ripening, with a length of 3–4 cm. Their distinctive shape—resembling a wind chime or gold ingot—gives them high ornamental value, making them popular as potted plants. This variety can grow up to 1.5 meters tall, with a yield of approximately 40–50 fruits per plant. As a late-maturing cultivar, it is highly sensitive to temperature: optimal flowering and fruiting occur at around 25℃. Temperatures exceeding 35℃ or dropping below 15℃ significantly reduce pollination success, leading to poor fruit set, while excessive diurnal temperature fluctuations hinder proper fruit development. Owing to its robust root system and disease resistance (including genes conferring tolerance to Fusarium wilt, salinity, and alkalinity), bat chili is widely used as a rootstock to improve other pepper varieties through grafting. It serves as a critical genetic resource for breeding stress-resistant cultivars. The fruits exhibit a pronounced pungency and are processed into condiments. Combined with its high fruit yield per plant, this variety is suitable for large-scale cultivation, embodying dual utility as both an economic crop and a horticultural plant.
