Main Characteristics of the Variety:
- Baical Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) is a perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family, with a thick, elongated and branched rhizome. Its root is conical, mostly twisted, 8-25 cm long and 1-3 cm in diameter, with a brownish-yellow or dark yellow surface. The root is hard and brittle, easily fractured, with a yellow cross-section and a reddish-brown central part. The center of older roots is withered and decayed or hollow, presenting a dark brown or brownish-black color. The root has a faint odor and a bitter taste. The corolla ranges from purple and purplish-red to blue. This plant prefers a warm yet cool climate, and is tolerant of severe cold, drought and barren soil. The underground parts of mature plants can withstand temperatures as low as -30℃. For cultivation, it is advisable to choose sunny plots with deep, fertile, neutral or slightly alkaline loam or sandy loam soil. Continuous cropping is prohibited.
