- Apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Mentha in the Lamiaceae family. The entire plant is densely covered with fine, white soft hairs and releases a green apple aroma when rubbed. Its stems are erect, 30–80 cm tall, with round or oblong-ovate leaves. Verticillasters cluster into cylindrical spikes at the apices of stems and branches. This variety thrives in warm, full-sun conditions, is intolerant of extreme heat and fairly cold-hardy, with an optimal growth temperature of 20–30℃. It favors moist, fertile alkaline soil. Apple mint foliage can be prepared into beverages or used for cold salads. It is widely applied to landscape flower beds, herbaceous borders and courtyards, or grown as potted ornamentals. Its stems, leaves and young shoots can be used medicinally.
