539 Frankenstein Black is an unusual American collector tomato producing medium to large beefsteak fruits in rich shades of purple, mahogany, and brown. The lower clusters generally bear flattened fruits, while upper clusters may produce rounder tomatoes. Fruits weigh approximately 5.3 to 14.1 oz and may retain deep green shoulders even when fully ripe. The thin skin surrounds juicy, meaty red-brown flesh with a very sweet, rich, savory flavor and a pleasantly spicy finish. Plants remain relatively manageable at approximately 4.3 to 4.9 ft tall and may be grown as semi-determinate or compact indeterminate vines, depending on the seed line. Good crack resistance and relatively early maturity make it especially valuable among dark beefsteak tomatoes.
