49 Orange Jazz is a spectacular midseason indeterminate beefsteak tomato bred by Fred Hempel of Artisan Seeds. The vigorous, regular-leaf vines produce heavy yields of large fruits weighing approximately 8.8–17.6 oz, with exceptional specimens growing even larger under favorable conditions. The broad, oblate beefsteaks ripen to a glowing orange accented by fine golden-yellow stripes. Gently ribbed shoulders and an attractive flattened shape give the fruits exceptional display quality. Inside, the meaty yet juicy orange flesh has a smooth, refined texture and a sweet, complex flavor with appealing fruity and peach-like notes. The fruits generally show good resistance to cracking and catfacing, making Orange Jazz an excellent choice for home gardens, specialty markets, fresh slicing, sandwiches, salads, and colorful tomato platters. Provide strong staking, caging, or trellising for the vigorous vines and heavy fruit.
