46 Charbonniere du Berry is a rare regional heirloom preserved in the historic Berry area of central France. The productive plants bear large, flattened, lightly ribbed beefsteak fruits weighing approximately 10.6–28.2 oz. Tomatoes ripen to deep red, reddish brown, or dark purplish mahogany while retaining attractive green to olive-marbled shoulders. The substantial red flesh is fine-grained, firm, and meaty, delivering a rich aromatic tomato flavor with gentle sweetness. Growth habit varies among preserved seed lines, with plants ranging from compact determinate forms to vigorous semi-determinate plants approximately 2.6–5 feet tall. Provide sturdy stakes or cages for the heavy fruits and productive clusters. Maintain consistent soil moisture and harvest promptly when ripe, since large fruits may develop stem-end cracking. Excellent for fresh slicing, sandwiches, salads, tomato platters, sauces, and preserving.
