173 Romovaya Baba is a Russian open-pollinated tomato released by Aelita and entered in the Russian State Register in 2015. This midseason indeterminate variety produces large, flattened beefsteak fruits with gentle ribbing and an unusual olive-green to yellow-green appearance at maturity. Fruits typically weigh approximately 8.8–12.3 oz, while the first fruits may reach about 1.3 lb under favorable conditions. The dense, juicy green flesh has a sweet, aromatic tomato flavor with a satisfying full-bodied finish. Fruits may remain surprisingly similar in color as they ripen, so judge maturity by a slight softening and developed flavor rather than color alone. Vigorous regular-leaf plants require sturdy stakes, cages, or trellising, along with pruning and training. Excellent for fresh salads, sandwiches, slicing, tomato juice, sauces, and unusual green-tomato platters.
