140 Copper River is an extraordinary midseason bush-type to semi-determinate tomato developed by Lynn Brown in California's Napa Valley and named for Alaska's famous Copper River. Compact yet vigorous regular-leaf plants commonly grow approximately 2.5–3.5 feet tall outdoors and may reach 4–5 feet under greenhouse conditions or during a long growing season. The productive plants bear rounded to slightly flattened beefsteaks weighing approximately 7.1–14.1 oz, with occasional fruits reaching 1 lb or more under favorable conditions. The tender skin develops an unusual blend of olive green, burnished copper, burgundy red, and rose-pink coloring. Inside, the meaty, juicy flesh remains bright lime green while developing a spectacular pink-to-salmon center and radiating red marbling. Its exceptionally sweet, rich, and complex flavor combines the fresh aromatic character of a green-when-ripe tomato with the deep, savory richness associated with dark-fruited varieties. Train plants to two or three main stems and provide a sturdy cage or stakes to support the heavy fruits. Harvest when the copper-red blush is fully developed and the fruit yields slightly to gentle pressure. Excellent for fresh slicing, sandwiches, salads, salsa, tomato juice, colorful sauces, and gourmet tomato platters.
