13 Mikado Black is a distinctive midseason indeterminate tomato from the dark-fruited Mikado family. The compact yet vigorous potato-leaf plants commonly reach approximately 3.3–4.6 feet tall and produce attractive clusters of rounded, flattened, and occasionally slightly elongated beefsteak fruits. Tomatoes generally weigh approximately 7.1–10.6 oz and develop deep mahogany, dusky purple, brown-black, and dark brick-red coloring, often with contrasting dark green shoulders. Inside, the rich red-purple flesh is meaty, juicy, and highly aromatic, with greenish-brown gel around the seed cavities and a clean, sweet flavor balanced by savory umami and a subtle smoky finish. Compared with Cherokee Purple and Black Krim, Mikado Black is often more compact and more distinctly potato-leafed while retaining the full, complex flavor expected from an excellent dark tomato. Train plants to one or two main stems and provide sturdy stakes, cages, or trellising to support the heavy fruit clusters. Harvest when the skin develops its full dusky color and the fruit yields slightly to gentle pressure. Excellent for thick fresh slices, sandwiches, salads, burgers, tomato plates, sauces, juice, and heirloom collections.
